Setting up a home office is not as easy as it seems. With remote working now a feature many employers are taking on, how will you set up your office? It’s not that hard and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune either.
Pick Your Spot Wisely
Before buying anything think ahead and see the area with the least distractions. If you have a spare room that is perfect. If not then find a large room that is quiet and has limited walking traffic. It’s much better than working at a table that has to be cleared every day. Try to find a spot with some natural light, it reduces eye strain and helps you stay focused.
Spend Money Where it Matters
There are certain things that are worth spending some money on.
- An adjustable chair. Your back will thank you.
- A desk at the right height, or a laptop stand
- Good internet, wired if you can so you have a better connection for video calls
- Good desk lamp
Set Limits
Creating a productive home office requires setting limits. More than the furniture you pick, the boundaries you create determine the level of productivity.
Set clear hours for your work, don’t give in to the temptation to work from the sofa for a few hours, and if you can, try and close a door to your home office at the end of the day so that your workspace isn’t in your line of sight all evening.
Don’t neglect posture and breaks
In a normal office, you stand up and get things done like going to the printer, grabbing a drink, or talking to a coworker. When you work from home, you have to be disciplined to take those breaks because they won’t happen. You can really make a difference in your comfort and focus for the day if you set a timer to get up at least once an hour.
Prepare for the boring but important tasks
Having enough supplies, keeping your work area organized, and having simple filing solutions are all very important. When a home office becomes a mound of papers it stops being used as a real workspace and just becomes a pile of stuff with a laptop on it.
